Netscape Navigator 3.0 FAQ
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
What are the advantages of 3.0 over earlier versions of
Netscape Navigator?
Netscape Navigator 3.0 makes your Internet experience even
more enjoyable by adding fully integrated video, audio, 3D,
and Internet telephone communications capabilities.
Other significant new features include LiveConnect,
enterprise customization of Navigator 3.0, and more. If you
want more details, visit the Netscape site for the latest
list of features.
How can I get Netscape Navigator 3.0?
It is included on the CD-ROM in Ventana's Official Netscape
Navigator 3.0 Book. Netscape Navigator 3.0 is also available
on the Internet at Netscape's web site, and in the Netscape
Navigator Personal Edition ver. 3.0; which includes software
to connect you to the Internet. If you wish to order over
the phone, you can contact Ventana at 1-800-743-5369. You
can also find the Personal Edition and the Official Netscape
Navigator 3.0 Book in computer and book stores nationwide.
What is the difference between The Official Netscape
Navigator 3.0 Book and the Netscape Navigator Personal
Edition?
The Official Netscape Navigator 3.0 Book contains detailed
information for using and trouble shooting Netscape 3.0, as
well as information on the Internet and a Companion CD ROM.
The CD features the Netscape Navigator 3.0 software and a
'Cool Sites' feature to help you start surfing the Web. The
Netscape Navigator Personal Edition includes the Netscape
Navigator 3.0 software, plus software to get you connected
to the Internet and sign up with one of several Internet
Service Providers. However, the Official Netscape Navigator
3.0 Book has more extensive documentation and tutorial
information.
Is the Netscape Navigator included in The Official Netscape
Navigator 3.0 Book fully licensed or registered?
The copy of Netscape Navigator 3.0 included with the book is
the LAN version of Netscape Navigator. It is exactly the
same software that Netscape distributes. The only difference
in that our license terms with Netscape require that our
customers contact Ventana, rather than Netscape, for
technical support. You can register with Netscape easily by
going on-line and launching Netscape. Once Netscape is
running open the Help menu and select Registration
Information. This will take you to Netscape's Web site,
where you can register your copy of Netscape Navigator.
I am having trouble getting my mail and/or News what should
I do?
The Netscape Navigator 3.0 Handbook has a section on
configuring your e-mail and news reader functions. If you
cannot find the answer to your problem there, either e-mail
help@vmedia.com or call us at 919-544-9404 ext. 81.
Netscape will install, but it can't seem to get anywhere,
what's wrong?
You must establish a SLIP or PPP connection to the Internet
with a Service Provider before Netscape will locate any
URL's.
The CD from The Official Netscape Navigator 3.0 Book crashes
my system before I can install Netscape. How can I install
the software?
You can install Netscape Navigator without using the CD's
viewer program following these directions: Use File Manager
or Windows Explorer to open the CD-ROM drive. You should see
two directories: 16 and 32. Open the 16 directory if you are
using Windows 3.x or the 32 directory if you have Windows
95. Open the Disk1 directory and double click Setup.exe to
install Netscape.
Am I entitled to upgrades?
Netscape offers subscriptions to all upgrades to Netscape
Navigator, and you can find more information about the
procedure for subscribing to Netscape upgrades at the
Netscape website.
Do I use the 16 bit or 32 bit version?
Use the 16 bit version with Windows 3.x. Use the 32 bit
version with Windows 95 or Windows NT.
How much support can Ventana Communications give me?
Ventana can provide help with installation, general
information questions and tips on basic use. If Ventana
doesn't know the answer to your question, we will consult
with the engineers at Netscape to find an answer.
Can I save my bookmarks and preferences from earlier
versions of Netscape when I install 3.0?
When Netscape 3.0 installs, it saves your bookmarks and
preferences. It is always a good idea to make backups just
in case. Copy your bookmark.htm and netscape.ini files to a
floppy before installing Netscape 3.0.
Will Netscape Navigator 3.0 work with my operating system?
There are versions of Netscape 3.0 available for Windows
3.x, Windows 95 or Windows NT, Macintosh, and UNIX. The
minimum requirements for Windows computers are a 386
processor with 8MB of RAM and 6Mb of free hard disk space.
The minimum requirements for a Macintosh computer are a
68030 processor with 8MB or RAM and 5MB of available disk
space.
Why do I get a 'no DNS entry' error message despite being
connected to the Internet?
DNS stands for Domain Name Services, which is the method
used to translate the name of a computer system (which is
easier for humans to remember) into its numeric IP address
(which is needed by any computer trying to connect to it).
The "server does not have a DNS entry" error means that
Netscape Navigator was unable to find a DNS name server on
your network that could find the IP address corresponding to
the name you gave. If you get a "The server does not have a
DNS entry" error when you try to access a certain web
server, then this could indicate any of several problems:
1.) There was a momentary network problem -- your network or
your domain name server was too busy to handle your
connection attempt. A second attempt to connect to the Web
site in question might succeed. If this happens to you
often, you might want to try connecting during off-peak
(less busy) hours, such as in the morning; also, inform your
system administrators of the problem. This is common cause
of the "No DNS" error.
2.) Your computer network is inside an Internet firewall,
and you do not have the necessary authorization to access
the outside world. Contact your local system administrators
to see if this is the case. If it is, you will have to go
into the Netscape Preferences and configure Netscape
Navigator to use a Proxy Server.
3.) The server name you're looking for doesn't exist, either
because you've typed its name incorrectly, you were given
the wrong name to use, or that server is down right now.
Double check the URL and try again.
4.) Your computer's TCP/IP software isn't set up properly.
This will prevent you from accessing any Web site. To solve
this, you will have to go over your TCP/IP software
configuration with your system administrator.
5.)Your network might be set up to use only NIS name mapping
instead of DNS, in which case you will not be able to use
the Navigator at all. Netscape Navigator only supports DNS,
not NIS.
Is Netscape Navigator 3.0 available on floppy disk?
Netscape 3.0 is available on 3.5 inch floppies for
purchasers of the Official Netscape Navigator 3.0 Book. To
order, call 1-919-544-9404. You will need to specify whether
you need the 16 bit or 32 bit version of Netscape 3.0. There
is a $10 shipping and handling charge for each set of disks.
Will Netscape Navigator 3.0 work with my AOL, Compuserve, or
University account?
Netscape Navigator must be run in conjunction with a SLIP or
PPP winsock compliant connection to the Internet. Check with
your service provider to determine if your connection meets
these requirements.
